shopping for hardware

Make sure you arm yourself with the following information before you shop for hardware. This is no time to rely on your memory.

If you're trying to match something, you should always carry photos and a template of the piece of hardware. To make a template, lay the piece on a sheet of paper and trace around it.

If you're not trying to match something exactly, but you have a vague idea of what you want for a certain door or piece of furniture, carry a photo of the door or a piece of furniture with you.

If you're replacing door hardware, be sure to take the existing hardware or a photo of it with you. This will help the salesperson figure out exactly what you need.

Always carry a list of any pertinent dimensions. If you need new drawer handles and the holes are already drilled, measure the distance between the centers of the pre-drilled holes. If you're dealing with door hardware, you'll need to know the thickness of the door, the width of the stile (on a paneled door, the first panel between the side of the door and the center of the door), whether the door is solid or hollow, which side of the door needs the hinges, whether the door swings into or out of the room, and whether the door has been predrilled.
